Vision: A comprehensive and diverse visual and performing arts education for every student in the Orinda Union School District and at Miramonte High School.
Mission: To champion and support visual and performing arts education in Orinda's schools, working with OUSD and other community organizations, to ensure program synergy and effectiveness. Rationale: Arts education is a critical component in the development of students' understanding, perception and interpretation of the world in which they live. Through arts exploration, students develop respect and appreciation for the diversity that exists within our immediate and greater society, increasing their self-awareness, developing creativity and expressing individuality. From OASIS to the Orinda Arts Council Schools Committee In 1996, an Orinda Parent Education program entitled "Art: the 4th R" caused several parents to mobilize in support of visual and performing arts in the schools. That same year, the California Department of Education introduced a new Visual and Performing Arts Framework. In 2001, thanks to funding from the Education Foundation of Orinda, Orinda Union School District took steps to move forward on an arts curriculum. The idea was conceived to have an Art Liaison on each Parent Club Board to advocate for and support the arts programs and the teacher specialists who provide them. Del Rey Parents' Club Art Liaison, Sandra Earl proposed the acronym, OASIS, to stand for Orindans for Arts Support in the Schools. This group of interested parents met, and arranged for the 1997 Mayor's pronouncement of "Celebration of Arts in the Schools Month" to call attention to OASIS' first community exhibit of student art. The Art Liaisons met regularly, to share information about the differing arts programs in place at their respective school sites. They also began meeting with individual School Board members and the District Superintendent, to discuss the possibilities and their hopes for a stronger, articulated K-8 program of arts education.
