Arts in the Community
Art In Public Places Committee
The vision of Orindan Ted Urban, Orinda's Art in Public Places Program was established in 2007 by the Orinda City Council with a mission to recognize artists as important cultural resources, and to bring the work of artists into the community to broaden the public's awareness, understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts.
Called Orinda Artspace, this public art display was conceived as a temporary exhibition program, aiming to introduce the public to a wide variety of artistic expressions and to encourage dialogue about public art and its impact on city spaces. The work of over 25 artists has been available for viewing in venues that include the Orinda Library and Library Plaza, the Community Center, and City Hall. All exhibited artwork has been generously lent by regional artists and is exhibited for a minimum period of one year. Recently, the APPC and the City of Orinda have become interested in permanently acquiring public art. Funds to purchase and keep community favorites are being sought to match a city matching funds program.
At it's inception, the Orinda Arts Council was asked to hold a permanent position on the Art in Public Places Committee, and provide support, in accordance with the closely aligned missions of the two organizations. The APPC is administrated by the Orinda Parks and Recreation Department and is also supported by the Friends of the Orinda Library, the Orinda Community Foundation, and other community organizations.
